What is a data view?
A data view creates a view on your data that produces a new column (or derived result) you can then use with metrics and measures.
Use a data view when the business logic needs multi-step or interval-aware math that does not fit a single aggregation or a metric formula over existing measures.
When you need a data view
Example — years of service: “How long has this employee worked for us?” is not always hire date minus today.
An employee might have worked 2020–2024, taken long-term leave, returned mid-2025, taken short-term leave later in 2025, and returned in 2026. You must add the intervals of working time, not a single open-ended span.
That kind of logic belongs in a data view. After the view exposes a usable field (for example, cumulative years of service), you can build measures and metrics on top of it.
Create or configure a data view
Open Analytics → Manage Analytics.
Open the Data views area.
Create or edit a data view with the logic your organization needs (syntax is environment-specific; use a known working example from your Aragorn environment—such as a Dev sample—as a starting point).
Save the data view.
Note: Exact SQL/expression syntax is not fully specified in the onboarding transcript. Confirm the editor syntax in your Aragorn environment (Dev examples are a good reference) before publishing customer-facing steps for a specific formula.
